When is The Open?
July, running Thursday to Sunday. It is always the third of the year's four majors.
Where is The Open played?
It rotates around a roster of links courses in Great Britain and Northern Ireland rather than staying at one venue. The R&A confirms the host well in advance; our current package is built around Royal Birkdale.
What makes it different from the other majors?
It is the oldest, first played in 1860, and the only one held outside the United States. It is also the only major played on links land, where the ground is firm, the wind is a factor every day and the weather can change the character of the course between morning and afternoon.
What is the Claret Jug?
The trophy, properly called the Golf Champion Trophy. The winner holds it for a year and returns it before the following Championship, taking home a replica.
What should I pack?
Layers and proper waterproofs, whatever the forecast says. Links weather turns quickly and there is very little shelter on the course. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than most people expect.
